The professional club began on 16 June 1967, when Claude Cuny's plan, hatched in spring 1964 around the amateur side Association sportive Lorraine, won professional status and a place in Division 2. Michel Platini arrived in 1972, initially with the reserve team, and in 1978–79 Nancy reached the European Cup Winners' Cup, going out in the second round, 4–3 on aggregate, to Servette. A slide after 1984 ended with relegation in 1986–87. The best start in top-flight history came in 2007–08, 35 points from 19 games and second place. Relegation to the Championnat National in 2022, a first, was reversed on 2 May 2025 with a 1–0 win over Nîmes Olympique and a return to Ligue 2.
Stade Marcel Picot, in Tomblaine, opened on 8 August 1926 as the University Stadium, also known as the Essey Bridge Sports Park. The Bernt-Morillon-Thouveny agency worked for the Urban Community on a complete renovation between 1999 and 2003, and the ground now holds 20,087.
