Metz were formed on 23 March 1932 and turned professional soon afterwards, with roots running back to SpVgg Metz, set up in 1905 when the city belonged to the German Empire. A second-division title in 1935 brought promotion, but the top flight became a fight for survival: relegation in 1950, relegation again in 1958, then a return in 1967 that lasted until 2001, when Metz went down and bounced straight back. Barcelona won the first leg of the 1984–85 Cup Winners' Cup tie 4–2. Metz went down in 2006 and again in 2011–12, came up in 2019, dropped in 2021–22 and returned for 2022–23 as Ligue 2 runners-up.
