The origins are murky, but most accounts place the birth of the club in 1906 as Racing Club lensois, and the name Racing Club de Lens has stood since 1969. The red and gold colours appeared in 1924, and in 1932 the Stade Félix Bollaert was inaugurated. Backing from the Compagnie des mines de Lens helped the club turn professional in 1934, and in a mining town that shaped its identity. Most players were miners by trade, and when the pits shut in 1962 the future of the club hung in the balance. Survival was hard from 1956 to 1968. Gervais Martel bought control in August 1988, and under Daniel Leclercq, known as the Druid, Lens reached the summit in 1998 as French champions. The club was stripped of its promotion in a ruling announced on 29 January 2015 and dropped back down, then returned to Ligue 1 on 30 April 2020. On 1 January 2023 Lens beat PSG 3–1 to end the leaders' unbeaten run.
