Bahia dates to New Year's Day 1931, a merger of players from two clubs. They won the Taça Brasil in 1959, and in 1960 became the first club to take part in the Taça Libertadores da America. In 1988 they won the Brazilian Championship against Internacional, taking the first leg in Salvador 2–1. The slide came in 1997, when relegation to the Série B arrived for the first time after a goalless draw with Juventude at the Fonte Nova. In 2002 the bank sponsoring the team went bankrupt, and the club kept sinking, dropping to the Série C in 2005. Even there they drew crowds, with an average of 40,400 a game in 2007 that was the largest in Brazil. A State Championship match against Esporte Clube Vitória in February 2018 saw nine players sent off, split between the two sides. City Football Group completed the purchase of 90% of the club in May 2023.
Bahia now play at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, a modern ground with room for 50,025 supporters. It was built for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on the site of the old stadium and opened on 5 April 2013. That old Fonte Nova served as the club's home from 1951 to 25 November 2007, the day part of the upper tier collapsed during the match with Vila Nova that confirmed a step up out of the Série C into the Série B. The old ground was imploded on 29 August 2010. The new arena has given Bahia a worthy stage for a fan base that has filled stands at every level, and a home edge that opposing sides rarely enjoy.
