Inter started out in 1909 and by 1927 had won a first state title, which gave the club the push it needed to grow. The side of 1939 to 1948 collected eight state championships in Rio Grande do Sul and produced the first six-in-a-row run there. The national stage came into view under Rubens Minelli in the 1970s, with Valdomiro ruling the right flank. Under Ênio Andrade, with Falcão scoring the last goal of the campaign, Inter sealed a third national crown on 23 December 1979. The same team reached its debut Copa Libertadores final in 1980. In 1984 the club supplied the whole squad for the Summer Olympics, creating a side known as Sele/Inter. A Copa do Brasil win arrived in 1992, and in 2006 Inter shocked Barcelona to take the world title for the first time. A draw with Fluminense on 11 December 2016 meant relegation, the first drop in the club's history.
Inter play at the Estádio Beira-Rio in Praia de Belas, a ground that opened in 1969 and holds 50,128. It is a long way from the club's first home, the Estádio dos Eucaliptos, which went up after the first state title in 1927 and opened its doors in 1931, in the neighborhood of Menino Deus. That older ground staged many glories and helped turn Inter into the leading force of southern Brazil. The move to the Beira-Rio gave the club a stadium to match its size, and for visitors it remains one of the more daunting places to ask for a result.
Everything at Inter is measured against Grêmio, the historical rival, and the Grenal ranks among the great derbies on the planet. The 1980s tell the story. Grêmio took the 1981 Brazilian Championship and, in 1983, both the Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup, while Inter lost important finals, which left the Colorado with a bittersweet decade. The rivalry reached another peak in a semi-final that earned its own nickname, the first time the bitter rivals met in a national knockout stage. The name alone tells a bettor to be careful.
