Criciúma Esporte Clube began on 13 May 1947 as Comerciário Esporte Clube, folded in a 1960s financial crisis and was refounded in 1976 by former members. The club took its present name in 1978 and adopted black, yellow and white in 1984. Its greatest feat came in 1991, when Felipe Scolari's side won the Copa do Brasil from the second division. Promotion to Série A followed in 1992, and five years in the top flight ended in relegation. Relegation to Série C in 2005 was answered with the 2006 title, and a return to Série A came in 2012.
