Monza were born on 1 September 1912 inside the Cappello Vecchio trattoria, the product of a merger between Pro Italia and Pro Monza. A first win followed on 20 September 1912, 2โ1 over Juventus Italia in Triante, and the club took the name Associazione Calcio Monza in November 1913. Red and white shirts were adopted in September 1932 and have stayed ever since.
The breakthrough to Serie B arrived on 4 June 1951, when Carlo Colombetti scored a penalty at Omegna. A tie-up with Simmenthal ran from 1955 until 14 July 1964, after which the club went back to its original name. Giovanni Cappelletti became president in mid-1972, and Monza spent the rest of that decade chasing a first top-flight place without landing it.
Off the pitch came the hard years. Monza were declared bankrupt on 18 March 2004, and 2012 brought relegation to Serie C2 and a revolving door of owners. A fresh start arrived on 28 September 2018, when Fininvest, led by Silvio Berlusconi, bought the club for about โฌ3 million. Monza reached Serie A for the first time through the 2022โ23 promotion, and the team secured 12th place in 2023โ24.
Monza's main grudge is with fellow Lombardy club Como, a fixture that has been called the hottest derby in Serie B. It began in earnest on 4 June 1967, when Monza won a decisive promotion play-off, and the temperature rose again on 13 April 1980, when Como equalised from the penalty spot in the last minute while Monza led 3โ1. Pisa form a more recent chapter. In 2007 the sides contested a Serie C promotion decider, Pisa winning it in extra time, and the rival supporters began attacking each other afterwards. Pro Sesto complete the list, a club from the adjacent city of Sesto San Giovanni.
2 wins for Monza, 2 for Como and 2 draws in 6 meetings: hard to separate (all competitions).
