Columbus was announced as one of the founding members of MLS on June 15, 1994. Lamar Hunt and his son Clark owned both the Crew and Kansas City from 1996. The Crew reached the U.S. Open Cup final in 1998 and won it for the first time in 2002. Their first MLS Cup came in 2008, after the first Eastern Conference title. Anthony Precourt took over as investor-operator in July 2013 and hired Gregg Berhalter, and in 2015 the Crew reached their second MLS Cup final but lost 2-1 at home to the Portland Timbers. The Haslam group's purchase was revealed on December 28, 2018, and the deal closed the next month. In December 2020 the Crew beat the Seattle Sounders 3-0 to win the MLS Cup again. In 2023, under Wilfried Nancy, they beat Atlanta United, Orlando City and FC Cincinnati to reach MLS Cup 2023.
ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus holds 20,371 and opened in 2021. Groundbreaking came in 2019, in the Arena District of Downtown Columbus, a site the club revealed in 2018 in its plans under new ownership. The stadium was first named in a sponsorship deal with a Columbus-based online real estate company on June 15, 2021, with the Crew's opening match at home following on July 3, versus New England. The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company bought the naming rights on November 25, 2025. The OhioHealth Performance Center, the training facility, opened in June 2021. The old home, Columbus Crew Stadium, opened on May 15, 1999 as the league's first purpose-built soccer ground, and the Crew beat the Revolution 2–0 in front of a sold-out 24,741.
The Crew's best-known contest is the Hell Is Real derby, and a playoff edition of it came in 2023, when Columbus beat Atlanta United, Orlando City and FC Cincinnati on the way to MLS Cup 2023. Cincinnati supporters named the Crew as a rival even when their team played in a lower division, and some Columbus fans did not return the compliment at first. The Crew also have a rivalry with the Chicago Fire. Trophy series add edge: the Trillium Cup against Toronto FC, with the cities not far apart, and the Lamar Hunt Pioneer Cup against FC Dallas. Real Derby is another name on the list, so the schedule has plenty of fixtures that carry local pride, and for anyone betting on them the home side usually gets extra push from the stands.
Against Atlanta United, Columbus Crew come out on top more often than not: 7 wins, 1 draw, 2 defeats (all competitions).
