The club's origins are a story of relocation. In October 2017, Precourt Sports Ventures announced plans to move its MLS franchise rights from Columbus to Austin, and the name and badge were unveiled on 22 August 2018. A stadium financing deal at McKalla Place followed on 19 December 2018, and on 15 January 2019 the league confirmed Austin FC, with a 2021 start date. Josh Wolff became the first head coach in July 2019. The first MLS match was a 0–2 loss to LAFC on 17 April 2021, and the first home victory, 4–1 against the Portland Timbers, came on 1 July 2021. Sebastián Driussi arrived from Zenit Saint Petersburg on 29 July 2021 for a $7 million fee. In 2022 the opening two matches produced 10 goals, an MLS record, and that year's finish earned a first continental place in the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League. After Wolff was released on 6 October 2024, Nico Estévez took over, and Austin made the 2025 U.S. Open Cup final, a landmark as the club's maiden tournament final.
Q2 Stadium opened in 2021 in Austin, and its capacity of 20,738 makes it a compact home for the club. The lease was signed on 19 December 2018, and the first Austin FC game there took place on 19 June 2021. In 2022 the transport authority began building a Red Line commuter rail station, and McKalla station started service on 24 February 2024, for the club's first match of the 2024 season.
