The present club was created in April 1969, when two local sides that had both dropped out of the top tier agreed to merge and take the name FC Augsburg. Their first game came on 30 July 1969, and most of the next decades went by in the second and third tiers. Success came early, with a league title in 1972–73 that returned professional football to the town, and in 1973–74 Helmut Haller came home after 11 years in Italy. Relegation followed in 1978–79, and then came a long spell in the Bayernliga, where Armin Veh took charge in 1991. A new stadium arrived in 2009, and under Jos Luhukay the club finished second in 2010–11 and climbed into Bundesliga for the first time ever. The first top-flight win came on 15 October 2011, 1–0 against Mainz 05. Fifth place in 2014–15, their best ever finish, sent Augsburg into the 2015–16 Europa League under Markus Weinzierl.
Augsburg keep fierce local rivalries with Ingolstadt and with TSV 1860 Munich. The 1860 feud began when the club travelled to Munich for a meeting in the then-new Olympic Stadium, and 80,000 flocked to the game. Bayern Munich supply the Bavarian derby, which Augsburg regularly sell out. At home there is also the Augsburg derby with TSV Schwaben Augsburg: the club won the Bavarian league at the first attempt, beating Schwaben in each of the first two league derbies since 1968.
