Wrexham trace their roots to 12 October 1863, when local businessmen formed a club to keep young men out of the pubs. The first game was on 22 October 1864 against the Prince of Wales Fire Brigade. The Welsh Cup began in 1877โ78, and Wrexham reformed as Wrexham Olympic in 1884, a name dropped in 1888. In 1921 they were founding members of the Third Division North.
The best days came with cups. The Racecourse Ground held a club-record crowd of 34,445 for Manchester United in the FA Cup in 1956โ57. Ken Barnes presided over a 10โ1 win against Hartlepool United in 1961โ62. By 1966 the club had finished 92nd in the Football League. The first European tie came against FC Zurich on 13 September 1972, and in 1976โ77 the club beat Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup and Sunderland in the FA Cup. The 2004โ05 Football League Trophy final win over Southend United came in the midst of financial trouble.
Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds bought the club in November 2020, and Welcome to Wrexham debuted on 24 August 2022. In 2025โ26 Wrexham played in the Championship for the first time since 1982.
The Racecourse Ground is the home of Wrexham and carries the claim of being the oldest international football stadium on the planet still staging international fixtures. Wales played their first home international there in 1877, and the ground has hosted more Wales games than any other. Capacity is 10,771, and the site dates to 1807.
The ground has changed hands more than once. In 2011 Wrexham University bought the stadium and for a period it carried the name of The Glyndลตr University Racecourse Stadium. In 2016 the Wrexham Supporters Trust took a 99-year lease and the old name returned, and in 2022 Wrexham AFC Limited bought the freehold. On 3 March 2025 councillors approved a 5,500-seater Kop stand, aimed at being ready for 2026/27 as the ground is due to host UEFA European Under-19 Championship matches.
The oldest hatred is with Chester, the cross-border derby. The first match was in 1888, a 3โ2 Wrexham win at Faulkner Street, and the most recent in March 2018 was a 2โ0 Wrexham win at the Racecourse Ground. Former Chester City player Lee Dixon called it a real derby, and it still ranks as the fiercest.
Tranmere Rovers and Shrewsbury Town are rivals through geography alone. More recent heat came from Stockport County and Notts County, after Wrexham chased the 2021โ22 and 2022โ23 National League titles against them. Wrexham finished 2nd in 2024โ25, 5 points clear of Stockport, who lost in the play-offs.
Since the 2024โ25 League One season there is also a newer feud with Birmingham City, known as the Hollywood Derby because actors own one side and Tom Brady is a part-owner of the other.
No defeat against Chester in five for Wrexham, across 10 recorded meetings (all competitions).
