Ajax were founded in Amsterdam on 18 March 1900 and won the KNVB Cup for the first time in 1917. Rinus Michels became manager in 1965 and his Total Football delivered titles in 1966, 1967 and 1968, then the 1971 European Cup final win over Panathinaikos, the first of three in a row. Louis van Gaal's side went through the 1994–95 Eredivisie season unbeaten and beat Milan 1–0 in the Champions League final through 18-year-old Patrick Kluivert. Four straight titles between 2010–11 and 2013–14 under Frank de Boer followed.
Ajax's first stadium, built in 1911, was a wooden structure called Het Houten Stadion. The club later also used the stadium that hosted the 1928 Summer Olympics, and in 1934 switched to De Meer Stadion, on the east side of Amsterdam, which held 29,500 and remained their base until 1996. That year they relocated to a new ground in the southeast of the city, the Amsterdam Arena, which has carried the name Johan Cruyff Arena since 2018 and holds 55,865.
Feyenoord are the archrival, and the fixture is framed as Ajax's graceful, elegant football against Feyenoord's indomitable fighting spirit, the confidence of the capital against the blue-collar mentality of Rotterdam. Until the 1973–74 season the two were the only Dutch clubs to take national titles and make their mark in Europe and beyond, before PSV and AZ joined the contest from 1974. PSV added a philosophical edge, with Total Football from Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff set against the approach Kees Rijvers and Guus Hiddink built in Eindhoven from the late 1970s onwards.
