The club formed in 1904 as Sport Lisboa, a club for Portuguese players alone, and became Sport Lisboa e Benfica on 13 September 1908 after acquiring Grupo Sport Benfica. Béla Guttmann led them to back-to-back European Cups, beating Barcelona 3–2 in 1961 and Real Madrid 5–3 in 1962. Between October 1976 and September 1978 they went 56 league matches unbeaten. The 2003–04 Taça de Portugal ended their longest silverware drought, and 2013–14 brought an unprecedented domestic treble of league, cup and league cup.
The current Estádio da Luz in Lisbon holds 68,100 and was finished in 2003, for €162 million, about €25 million over the plan. It replaced the ground Benfica used from 1954, which was pulled down in 2002–03 and had been the largest stadium in Europe from 1985 to 1987, at 120,000. The new stadium is a UEFA category four venue, staged several matches of Euro 2004 including the final, and hosted the Champions League finals of 2014 and 2020.
