Sporting began in June 1902 as Sport Club de Belas, and António Félix da Costa Júnior proposed the name Sporting Clube de Portugal on 1 July 1906. Between 1947 and 1954 the club took seven league titles in just eight seasons, and in 1963–64 it beat MTK Budapest in the final of the Cup Winners' Cup. The 18-year league drought ended in 2000, with a 4–0 win over Salgueiros on the last match day under Augusto Inácio, and Cristiano Ronaldo, then 17, made his first senior appearance on 14 August 2002 against Inter Milan. Rui Borges led the club to the 2024-25 title, a second straight league win, the first such pair since 1953/54.
Sporting's earlier homes include Sítio das Mouras, inaugurated on 4 July 1907, Campo Grande from 1917 to 1937 and Lumiar from 1937 to 1956, before the first Estádio José Alvalade opened in 1956. The current stadium, designed by Tomás Taveira, opened on 6 August 2003 and holds 52,095. Its opening match was a 3–1 win over Manchester United in a friendly that marked Cristiano Ronaldo's departure from the club, and it was used during Euro 2004. It also hosted quarter-finals and semi-finals in the 2019–20 Champions League.
Benfica are the local rivals, a feud dating to 1907, after eight Benfica players switched to Sporting in search of better training conditions. Another episode came before the 1993–94 season, when president Sousa Cintra took advantage of Benfica's financial crisis to sign Paulo Sousa and Pacheco, both of whom had terminated their contracts with Benfica. Porto is the other rival, and the two clubs have met in Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira decisions as well.
