León debuted at the Patria stadium on 20 August 1944 and lost 5–3 to Atlante, a rough start for a club that soon became a power. It won the Copa MX in 1957–58, but the long story is one of drops and returns: relegation to the Segunda División came after 1986–87, and the Esmeraldas returned for 1990–91 under Víctor Manuel Vucetich. Grupo Pachuca bought the club on 19 November 2010. In 2012 León beat Correcaminos UAT 6–2 on aggregate to return to the top flight. The 2013–14 season was historic: León took the Apertura and the Clausura, and with the back-to-back wins of 1947–48 and 1948–49 behind them became the first side in Mexico to manage consecutive titles on two separate occasions. The Clausura 2019 final was lost to Tigres UANL, but on 13 December 2020 León beat Club Universidad Nacional 3–1 on aggregate for the title, matching Cruz Azul with eight in total. After winning the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League, León qualified for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and were disqualified on 21 March 2025 over multi-club ownership links to Grupo Pachuca, with Los Angeles F.C. taking their place.
León play at the León Stadium in León de Los Aldama, a ground with a capacity of 31,297 that opened in 1967. Building work began in August 1965 and wrapped up by the end of 1966, and the opening on 1 February 1967 pitted Santos against River Plate. The ground has seen two World Cups, in 1970 and 1986, among them West Germany against England in the 1970 quarter-final and the USSR against Belgium in the 1986 second round. After years of ownership disputes, Grupo Pachuca bought the stadium in 2021 with government financing, which put the club and its ground under the same group.
Unión de Curtidores is Club León's oldest rival, a rivalry that began because both clubs reside in León, Guanajuato; Curtidores were founded in 1928 and were the dominant team in León in their early years. The one that stands out is Irapuato, who also appear in the Clásico del Bajio, a fixture contested in the top flight and in the Primera División A, which is now Ascenso MX. Pachuca add another layer, mainly because the two clubs have similar owners, and on July 11, 2018 they met in a friendly at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Brewers' ballpark, with 18,321 fans watching. For anyone backing León, the Irapuato game carries the sharper edge, with the Curtidores rivalry the oldest on the list.
The head-to-head with CF Pachuca is level: León have 4 wins and 5 defeats in 10 (all competitions).
