Twelve young men from the Rosenborg district of Trondheim founded the club on 19 May 1917 as Sportsklubben Odd, and it became Rosenborg Ballklub on 26 October 1928. Promotion to the Main League came in 1967, and 1977 brought a season with one win and last place. After 14 trophyless years the 1985 league title arrived by a single point ahead of Lillestrøm. Nils Arne Eggen returned as head coach in 1988, and doubles followed in 1988 and 1990. Rosenborg reached the Champions League group phase 11 times between 1995 and 2007, beating Real Madrid 2–0 in 1997–98.
Lerkendal Stadion opened on 10 August 1947 as Trondheim's municipally owned athletics and football venue, and Rosenborg moved in for the 1957–58 campaign. The wooden stands were replaced with concrete on both long sides ahead of 1962, floodlights arrived in 1968 for UEFA matches and the current stadium took shape in stages after 1995, the short sides finished in 2001 and the last long stand completed a year later. Capacity is 21,426, and the official record is 28,569 against Lillestrøm in 1985.
