Newcastle United were born in 1892 when the club absorbed local rivals Newcastle West End, after Newcastle East End had spent a decade building a professional side. They were refused entry to the First Division that year and began life in the Second. The breakthrough came in 1903–04, when a swift, short-passing team dominated English football for almost a decade and reached the FA Cup final in 1905 and 1906 before finally lifting the trophy in 1910. The 1950s brought three more FA Cups, in 1951, 1952 and 1955. Europe arrived in 1969 with the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, won 6–2 over two legs. The Keegan years then produced the near-miss of 1995–96, when Newcastle came very close to the title, with Alan Shearer arriving in 1996 for a then world record £15 million. Relegation followed in 2008–09 under Alan Shearer, ending a spell in the top flight that began in 1993. Another Championship title came in May 2017, and the takeover of 7 October 2021 led to Champions League football in 2022–23 and the 2025 EFL Cup final win over Liverpool.
St James’ Park has been the club's home since the 1880s, with football played on the site from 1880, and it sits on a hill above the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. It holds 52,729 and the tiers rise steeply, which is why the noise lands so hard on visiting teams. A redevelopment between 1900 and 1905 once made it the biggest stadium in England. The Milburn Stand arrived in 1987 and the Sir John Hall Stand in 1993, and double tiers were added between 1998 and 2000. The Metro station has served the ground since 1982, and the venue has hosted matches at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Sunderland are Newcastle's main rivals, and the Tyne–Wear Derby is the fixture that carries the name. Middlesbrough sit alongside them as the other traditional opponent, and meetings with that club go under the Tyne-Tees Derby banner. These are the rivalries the club is known for, so a Sunderland or Middlesbrough fixture is a date worth circling for any Newcastle backer. The local feuding goes back further than either, to the founding years. Newcastle began life as Stanley in 1881, and in 1892 the club took on its present form by absorbing the assets of the defunct local rivals Newcastle West End, home stadium included. A city with a pair of football clubs ended up with one, and the survivor took over the ground of the side it replaced.
This is a tough fixture for Newcastle: Sunderland have beaten them 8 times in 10 meetings (all competitions).
