Bollklubben Häcken was registered on 2 August 1940 and moved up the local ladder quickly, working up through the local divisions to seniorclass 1 between 1944 and 1947. Division 4 in 1950 and Division 3 the year after turned a local side into a comet team in the national press. A bid for Allsvenskan fell to Kalmar FF in 1953, and relegation from Division 2 followed in 1954. In 1955 a Division 3 record crowd of 18,229 saw the game against IK Oddevold. Häcken went down in 1998 and were back a year later, the season Kim Källström debuted. In 2012 they finished second in Allsvenskan, their best league result to that point.
Häcken's main rivals are the other three leading Gothenburg clubs: IFK Göteborg, Gais and Örgryte IS IFK are rated the biggest of them. A lesser rivalry runs with IF Elfsborg from Borås, and with fellow Hisingen islanders IF Warta and Hisingsbacka FC, a contest felt most among the younger age groups. The Hisingen pair are neighbours on the same island as Häcken.
