Malmö FF came into being on 24 February 1910, founded by the 19 members of BK Idrott with Werner Mårtensson as first chairman. A 1934 relegation for breaching amateur regulations was reversed in 1937, the year Eric Persson became chairman. Under him the club went from titleless to ten Swedish championships by 1974, the first arriving in 1944. Bob Houghton's tactics drove a successful 1970s, and the run to the 1979 European Cup final, against Nottingham Forest in Munich, remains the biggest success in the club's story. Roy Hodgson took over in 1985. Relegation in 1999 was followed by a return in 2001, helped by the emergence of Zlatan Ibrahimović.
Eleda Stadion has been Malmö FF's home since 2009. Plans for a new stadium followed the 2004 Allsvenskan title, work began in 2007, and the opening came on 13 April 2009 in a home game against Örgryte IS, in which Labinot Harbuzi scored the first goal. Before that came Malmö Stadion, built for the 1958 World Cup and home from 1958, and before that Malmö IP, shared with IFK Malmö from 1910 until 1958. Malmö Stadion's record crowd was 29,328, against Helsingborgs IF on 24 September 1967.
Helsingborgs IF, IFK Göteborg and IFK Malmö are named as the main rivals. The Helsingborgs feud dates from Malmö FF's promotion to Allsvenskan in the 1930s and rests on geography, as both clubs belong to Scania. IFK Malmö is a rivalry of place and history, though that club has not been in Allsvenskan since 1962, so meetings are rare. Against IFK Göteborg the theme is title clashes between Sweden's two most successful clubs, the only pair to have reached European cup finals. A rivalry with FC Copenhagen has grown stronger since the 2000s.
Against Helsingborg, Malmö FF come out on top far more often than not: 7 wins, 0 draws, 1 defeat (all competitions).
