After a single season in the 2nd Division in 1952–53, AGF won four Danish championships and five cups in the next twelve seasons. A fifth league title came in 1986, with further cups in 1987, 1988 and 1992. Financial problems followed a third-place finish in 1998, and relegations in 2005–06, 2009–10 and 2013–14 came during some of the worst results in the club's history. A 2016 cup final ended in a 2–1 loss to FC Copenhagen. On 10 May 2026 Jakob Poulsen, in his first year as head coach, delivered the first championship since 1986 with a 2–0 win away to Brøndby.
Aarhus Stadium was inaugurated on 5 June 1920, a week after AGF played the first football match there, a friendly against Aarhus 1900. A rebuild between 1999 and 2001 brought an all-seated capacity of 20,032, and the ground has carried the Ceres Park name since 2015, after NRGi Park from autumn 2006. Demolition of the old stadium began in early 2024, and AGF moved to a temporary ground, Ceres Park Vejlby, which reached a capacity of 11,500 once a new main grandstand went up in summer 2025.
Brøndby are AGF's primary rival, a feud built on close matchups in the 1980s and 1990s. The sharpest memory dates from 1995–96, when Brøndby equalised 3–3 at AGF with a goalkeeper header in round 30, a goal remembered as the decisive one of that season. Two rounds later Brøndby moved top and held the lead. Aalborg BK share a rivalry rooted in both being among the oldest clubs in Jutland, and Randers see AGF as a rival more than AGF return the feeling.
Aarhus against Randers is a high-scoring fixture, averaging 3.2 goals over 10 meetings (all competitions).
