The club began in 1902 as Be Quick, founded by the Hollander brothers, and became Go Ahead in 1905 after the Dutch Football Association asked for a change, to avoid confusion with another team. On 7 October 1962 they beat Roda JC 11–1 in Deventer, the biggest win in club history, and promotion to Eredivisie followed in 1963. The suffix Eagles arrived on 1 July 1971, on head coach Barry Hughes's suggestion, and in 1971–72 they were the only side to beat Ajax in any competition. After four years in the second tier, they went up again in May 2021.
