Lanús was created on 3 January 1915 when the struggling Lanús United merged with Club El Progreso, and the name Club Atlético Lanús was made official on 27 January 1915. The top flight came in 1919. The middle decades were a roller coaster of relegations, with the worst Primera season in 1972, another drop after 1977, and by 1979 only 2,000 members facing a first campaign in the Third Division. The club clinched the 1981 Primera C title with fixtures to spare, went up in 1986 with more than 25,000 members, and on 24 May 1992 returned to the top division in front of more than 30,000 supporters, beating Deportivo Maipú 2–0. The Copa CONMEBOL arrived in 1996, and the first Primera División title came in the 2007 Apertura under Ramón Cabrero. Then the trophies piled up: the Copa Sudamericana in 2013 against Ponte Preta, a second league title in 2016 after a 4–0 win over San Lorenzo, and a first Copa Libertadores final in 2017 after overturning River Plate from 3–0 down. In 2025 Lanús beat Atlético Mineiro 5–4 on penalties to win a second Copa Sudamericana.
