Lazio started life on 9 January 1900 as Società Podistica Lazio, in the Prati district of Rome. Silvio Piola led a second-place finish in 1937, the club's highest pre-war result, and a Coppa Italia win followed in 1958. The first relegation came in 1961, with a return to the top flight two years later. Back in Serie A in 1972–73, Lazio emerged as surprise challengers to Milan and Juventus for the Scudetto and lost out only on the final day, then won the first title in 1973–74. A scandal over illegal bets on their own matches forced Lazio down to Serie B in 1980, and a nine-point deduction in 1986 came from another betting scandal. Sergio Cragnotti arrived in 1992, and the club won a second Scudetto in 2000, the Cup Winners' Cup in 1999 and the UEFA Super Cup against Manchester United the same year. Claudio Lotito took the majority in 2004, and Coppa Italia wins followed in 2008–09 against Sampdoria, 2012–13 against Roma and 2018–19 against Atalanta.
Lazio play at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, which holds 70,634 following work completed in 2008. Big occasions have found the ground before: the 1960 Summer Olympics, then the European Championship final in 1980, World Cup games in 1990 and Champions League finals in 1996 and 2009. During 1989–90 the team played at the Stadio Flaminio while the Olimpico was being rebuilt, and in later years the club has talked up plans to return to Flaminio. It is a vast, historic bowl that both capital clubs share, and a sea of sky blue behind the goal makes it a fierce place for visitors.
