Sassuolo spent most of their early life in the amateur divisions, reaching Serie D in 1968, and the modern club took shape with a merger in 1974 that formed US Sassuolo Calcio. Promotion to Serie C2 came in 1984, relegation in 1990 and a return in 1998. The real rise started in 2006, with the first Serie C1 place, and on 27 April 2008 the Serie C1/A title brought a first promotion to Serie B. The 2012–13 season under Eusebio Di Francesco delivered the Serie B title and a first top-flight campaign, secured by a 1–0 win over Livorno on 18 May 2013. Sassuolo won the TIM Trophy that July, played their first Serie A match on 25 August 2013 and beat Bologna 2–1 on 20 October for a first win. Domenico Berardi then scored four in a 4–3 comeback against Milan. A sixth place in 2015–16 meant a first Europa League spot. Under Roberto De Zerbi the team grew into an attack-minded force, but relegation came in 2023–24. Sassuolo won Serie B in 2025 and went straight back up.
The cabinet is the story of a climb, and the biggest prizes are the two Serie B titles, in 2012–13 and 2024–25. Below that sit the Serie C1 title of 2007–08, the Serie D titles of 1983–84 and 1997–98, the Promozione Emilia-Romagna of 1980–81 and the Supercoppa di Serie C in 2008.
Sassuolo play at the Mapei Stadium - Città del Tricolore in Reggio Emilia, which opened in 1995 and holds 21,584. The ground was previously the Stadio Giglio, and the club has used it since 2013–14, sharing it with Serie B club Reggiana. Green and black have been the club's colours since the 1970–71 season. It is a modern, compact ground where a lively crowd can make the difference in tight matches, and playing in a different town from the club's own gives Sassuolo an unusual home identity.
