Atalanta came to life on 17 October 1907 when students at the Liceo Classico Paolo Sarpi started the club, naming it after a female athlete from Greek mythology. A merger in 1920 gave them the black and blue colours, and the current stadium opened in 1928. They reached Serie A in 1937, came back as Serie B champions in 1940 and won the Coppa Italia in 1963, with Angelo Domenghini scoring a hat-trick against Torino. The decades after brought yo-yo years, falling as low as Serie C1 in 1981 and reaching Serie A again in 1984. Filippo Inzaghi scored 24 league goals in 1996–97 and became the club's first Serie A top scorer. Gian Piero Gasperini arrived before 2016–17 and turned the club into a European regular: fourth place in 2016–17, third in 2018–19, their best ever league finish, and then Champions League football. In 2023–24 Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen 3–0 in the Europa League final, thanks to a hat-trick from Ademola Lookman, to win their first trophy since 1963.
The Coppa Italia of 1962–63 was a lone domestic cup win, and more than six decades later the UEFA Europa League of 2023–24 finally gave the club another major prize. Between them stand six Serie B titles, in 1927–28, 1939–40, 1958–59, 1983–84, 2005–06 and 2010–11, and one Serie C title in 1981–82.
Atalanta's home since 1928 sits in Bergamo, in the Borgo Santa Caterina area. It opened after a one-year build, at a cost of 3.5 million lire. In 1994 it took the name Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, with the Curva Sud nicknamed the Curva Morosini in 2012. In 2015 the side stands were expanded to put fans only several metres from the benches, which was a revolutionary feature at the time. In the early years the club had no field of its own and played friendlies in the open, at Piazza d'Armi and at Campo di Marte.
The most intense rivalry for Atalanta's supporters is with nearby Brescia, and it is far older than football: the feud between Bergamo and Brescia reaches back to the Middle Ages. It started in 1126, when Bergamo bought land that Brescia had put up for sale, and territorial disputes followed. Both cities came together in the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, yet that historical rivalry has shaped matches between the clubs ever since. Roma became rivals in 1984, once the friendly ties between the two sets of supporters had broken down, and the rivalry with Lazio sharpened after Lazio won the 2019 Coppa Italia final against Atalanta. Fiorentina became a tense fixture during Gian Piero Gasperini's tenure as manager, and fans of Atalanta and Torino have shared a rivalry since at least 1977. Juventus, Milan, Inter and Napoli are counted among the strong rivalries too.
Atalanta have won 6 of 10 against Torino, with 2 draws and 2 defeats (all competitions).
