Ipswich began in 1878 as an amateur side called Ipswich A.F.C., and in 1888 joined forces with the local rugby club to become Ipswich Town. The club's golden age belongs to Ramsey. Ipswich won the Second Division in 1960โ61 and went straight up to the First Division, where they were crowned English champions and entered the 1962โ63 European Cup, thrashing Floriana 14โ1 before AC Milan knocked them out. Ramsey then departed in April 1963 for the England job, and England won the 1966 World Cup. Bobby Robson took over in January 1969, and under him Ipswich beat Arsenal at Wembley to win the FA Cup in 1978, then lifted the UEFA Cup in 1981 with a 5โ4 aggregate victory over AZ Alkmaar. Robson left for England in July 1982. Years later, John Lyall led the club to the Second Division title and the new Premier League for 1992โ93. Ipswich came back via the last Division One play-off final at Wembley in 2000, a 4โ2 win over Barnsley. A run of back-to-back promotions in 2023โ24 ended a 22-year absence from the top flight.
Portman Road in Ipswich has been the club's home since 1884 and holds 30,056. Before that, Ipswich played at two town grounds, Broomhill and Brook's Hall, between 1878 and 1884. The club was among the first to use goal nets, in 1890, and a wooden stand rose alongside the road in 1905. By 1954 every side had terracing, and floodlights followed in 1959. A two-tier Portman Stand replaced the east-side terracing in 1971, and the West Stand added a third tier in 1982. That stand was renamed the Pioneer Stand after the club's electronics sponsor and made all-seater in 1990. The North Stand took Sir Bobby Robson's name in September 2009.
