Sheffield United came together on 22 March 1889, born out of the city's cricket club, and the heyday arrived fast. The 30-year stretch from 1895 to 1925 was the golden age, and no trophy has followed it bar promotion prizes. The darkest days ran from 1975 to 1981, when a sixth-place finish in the First Division in 1974–75 gave way to relegation and, by 1981, the Fourth Division. Dave Bassett engineered the revival that carried the Blades back to the First Division in 1990, and they were founder members of the Premier League in 1992. A decline followed, with the 2010–11 relegation to League One the low point. Chris Wilder, a lifelong fan, took League One by storm with 100 points in 2016–17 and secured promotion to the Premier League in 2018–19. The return in 2023–24 ended in relegation and a record 104 goals conceded, and the club then finished third in the Championship in 2024–25 before losing the playoff final to Sunderland.
Bramall Lane began as a cricket ground, leased to Sheffield United Cricket Club by the Duke of Norfolk in 1855 with cricket the first sport played, on 30 April 1855. Football followed, with its first game in 1862, and the ground is billed as the oldest major league venue on the planet. The world's first floodlit game was played there on 14 October 1878. Yorkshire County Cricket Club, founded in 1863, kept playing there every summer until 7 August 1973, when building work began on a football-only stadium. It is now an all-seater holding around 32,000, and a 3,000 seat corner stand was completed in 2006. The stands sit tight to the pitch, and a full house in Sheffield makes life awkward for visitors.
Sheffield Wednesday are the rivals that matter most. The Steel City derby is named after the industry for which Sheffield is globally famous, and it is the fixture that defines the city.
