Hull City were founded on 28 June 1904 and had to wait for their place in the Football League, unable to apply for 1904–05, so the first matches were friendlies. A permanent home at Anlaby Road followed in March 1906. The club came close to promotion in 1909–10 and then spent decades in the lower divisions, with Raich Carter leading them out of the Third Division North in 1948–49 and Cliff Britton delivering the Third Division in 1966. Relegation to the Third Division in 1995–96 marked the low, but the move to the new KC Stadium in December 2002 changed everything. Back-to-back promotions in 2004–05 helped carry Hull up from the fourth tier to the top flight in five seasons, the third-fastest climb in English football history. Steve Bruce took them back to the Premier League on 13 May 2013, they reached the 2014 FA Cup final against Arsenal, and Diamé struck from distance to beat Sheffield Wednesday in the play-off final on 28 May 2016, sealing an instant return to the Premier League.
Every title comes from the third rung of the pyramid: 1932–33, 1948–49, 1965–66 and 2020–21. The only other honour is a third-place promotion in 1984–85.
The MKM Stadium in Kingston upon Hull opened in 2002 and holds around 25,000. Hull moved there in December 2002 after 56 years at Boothferry Park, having started at Anlaby Road, which opened in March 1906 and was left behind when operations were suspended in 1941 during the Second World War. The inaugural EFL Awards in 2006 gave it the Best Ground prize. It has carried several names since, KC Stadium, KCOM Stadium and, from 2021, the MKM Stadium, once MKM Building Supplies bought the naming rights. The sponsors change but the atmosphere is steady, and a full house here makes visiting teams uncomfortable.
Hull's rivalries are a patchwork rather than a single grudge. Sheffield United sit at the heart of the sharpest one, which began in 1983–84, when the Blades went up and Hull stayed down; Hull needed a margin of more than two goals on the final day, managed only 2–0, and missed out in agonising fashion. At local level they contest the Humber derby with Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United, yet supporters see Leeds United as the bigger opponents than either of those two Lincolnshire teams. Lincoln City and York City fans also believe Hull are their main rivals, though the feeling is not mutual.
