There was never any glamour in the plan at Middlesbrough. The club has been around since 1876, it shares its name with the place it calls home and it plays in the Championship, a league where nobody gets an easy afternoon. That grind suits them. Back them on their strengths, treat the dreadful spells as noise, and you will usually find the price on a stubborn side is fairer than the table suggests.
Middlesbrough sit top of the Championship, one point clear of second place.
In addition, at 2.1 goals per game, Middlesbrough's attack is ahead of the 1.47 league average.

A history of near-misses, one near-death experience and plenty of stubbornness: that is Middlesbrough. The club turned professional in 1889, reverted to amateur status in 1892 and finally committed for good in 1899. Jack Charlton took over in 1973 and guided them back to the top flight. Then came 1986, when Steve Gibson helped bring together a consortium that completed the Football League registration with 10 minutes to spare. The rescue paid off. Middlesbrough were among the founders of the new FA Premier League in 1992–93, going down after a single season, and in 2006 two late comebacks from 3–0 down against FC Basel and Steaua Bucharest sent them into the UEFA Cup final, where Sevilla won 4–0 in Eindhoven. Relegation arrived in 2008–09 and again in 2017.
Supporters named the Riverside Stadium themselves, by vote, when the club moved in during 1995. It holds 34,742, began life as a 30,000-seater built for £16 million and was upgraded for the 2016–17 season to meet Premier League requirements. Before it came Ayresome Park, home from 1903 for 92 years, designed by Archibald Leitch, a venue at the 1966 FIFA World Cup and demolished in 1997 to make way for houses. From 2013–14 away fans sat in the South East corner while home supporters filled the space behind both goals, the idea being to turn the volume up.
The team every Middlesbrough supporter most wants to beat is Newcastle United. That is the Tyne–Tees derby, the fixture with the sharpest edge. Sunderland come next, the opposition in the Tees–Wear derby, and a planetfootball.com survey in 2004 added Leeds United to the list. None of it is subtle. Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds: the order matters to the fans, even if the bookmakers shrug. Rivalry games have a habit of tearing up the form guide, so league positions tell you less than usual. Treat any of these as its own market, with a different kind of nerve, a hostile crowd and a long memory on both sides. Price the occasion before the teams, and do not be shocked when the table-topper gets a fright.
