Norwich City came to life at a gathering in the Criterion Café on 17 June 1902. The first nickname was the Citizens, but by 1907 the chairman, a keen breeder of canaries, had renamed his boys the Canaries and switched the strip to yellow and green. Debts forced voluntary liquidation on 10 December 1917, and the club joined the Third Division in 1920 before settling at Carrow Road in 1935. The 1958–59 FA Cup semi-final run was one of the great achievements, and the first silverware came in 1962 under Ron Ashman, a 4–0 aggregate victory over Rochdale in the League Cup. The club were founder members of the Premier League and finished third in 1992–93 after emerging as surprise title contenders. In 1996 Delia Smith and Michael Wynn-Jones became the controlling shareholders. Paul Lambert then lifted the club from League One to the Premier League in successive years, Daniel Farke became the first head coach from outside the British Isles in May 2017, and the club has since dropped out of the Premier League for a record sixth time.
Carrow Road in Norwich opened in 1935 and holds around 27,000. Before it came Newmarket Road, the home for six years after 1902, and then a converted chalk pit nicknamed The Nest. Growing crowds outgrew that site in the 1930s, and Carrow Road took over in 1935. The original stadium was built in just 82 days, which club officials called the eighth wonder of the world. The record attendance came in 1963, when 43,984 watched an FA Cup tie against Leicester City. The 7,000 seat stand built in 2003 became the Jarrold Stand, and the ground was converted to all-seater after the Taylor Report. It is a compact, loud old ground, and the home crowd matters.
