Granada CF began on 6 April 1931 as Recreativo de Granada, played its first match on 6 December that year and beat Xerez 11–0 on 23 April 1933. La Liga debut came in 1941–42, and eight straight top-flight seasons from 1968–69 to 1975–76 brought sixth-place finishes in 1971–72 and 1973–74. Relegation to the fourth tier followed in 2002–03, and by July 2009 the club was on the brink of dissolving. Promotion through the play-offs on 18 June 2011 ended a 35-year absence from the top division. Granada was last-placed in 2023–24 and went down.
The Nuevo Los Cármenes Stadium opened in 1995 and holds 21,600. Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen played the opening friendly on 16 May 1995. Before the move, Granada played at Estadio Los Cármenes, which opened on 23 December 1934, and earlier still at Campo de Las Tablas, a ground dating from December 1931.
