QPR trace their official formation date to 1882, when Christchurch Rangers began, though the modern club took shape in 1886 when St Jude's and Christchurch Rangers merged. The Southern League was won in 1907–08 and 1911–12, and Football League membership followed in 1920. Nearly 20 different grounds, a league record, came before the club settled permanently at Loftus Road in 1917. The day that defines the club came on 4 March 1967, when QPR beat West Bromwich Albion 3–2 after trailing by two goals, becoming the first Third Division side to win the League Cup. Dave Sexton took them to second place in the First Division in 1975–76, missing the title by a single point. In 1982 they reached their only FA Cup final, against Tottenham Hotspur. They were founder members of the Premier League in 1992–93 and finished fifth as the top London club. Administration came in 2001, Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone bought the club in September 2007, and promotion arrived on 30 April 2011 after Watford were beaten 2–0.
Loftus Road in London opened in 1904 and holds 18,439. After 1886 QPR moved through 15 sites in west and north-west London. Joining the Football League in 1920 settled things: only two grounds since, Loftus Road and the White City Stadium. In June 2019 the club gave the ground's naming rights to a local charity, the Kiyan Prince Foundation, and on 25 May 2022 it announced that the ground would go back to the name Loftus Road for 2022–23. A £20m training ground at Heston Sports Ground received planning permission on 31 March 2021, and construction began on 1 October 2021.

Other notable rivals include the fellow West London clubs Fulham and Brentford, while London derbies against West Ham United, Charlton Athletic and Millwall have also sparked some rivalry, though not as much as the main one.
