Lyon in their current form date from 1950, when about twenty people met on 23 May at Café Neuf on Place Bellecour and agreed to found the club. The first official match followed on 27 August 1950, a 3–0 win over CA Paris-Charenton in front of 3,000 supporters, and Division 2 was won in 1950–51 to earn promotion. Lyon were up and down in the early years, then picked up a first Coupe de France in 1963–64 by beating Bordeaux 2–0. The real transformation began in June 1987, when local businessman Jean-Michel Aulas bought the club. In 2002 Lyon won their first-ever Ligue 1 title and kept going for seven in a row, a national record, before Bordeaux ended the streak in 2008–09. Europe brought a Champions League semi-final in 2010, and the fifth and latest Coupe de France arrived in 2011–12, a 1–0 win over Quevilly. Aulas stepped down in 2023 after 36 years, with John Textor's group having bought control in December 2022. Money trouble nearly cost Lyon dearly: relegated administratively on 24 June 2025, they were reinstated on 9 July 2025.
Lyon now play at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, a modern arena in Décines-Charpieu that holds 59,186 and opened in 2016. The first game there came on 9 January 2016, a 4–1 win over Troyes, with Lacazette among the scorers. Before that, the club lived at the Stade de Gerland from 1950 to 2015, an old stadium that was listed as a Monument historique in 1967 and set its record crowd of 48,552 for a derby with Saint-Étienne in September 1980. The last match at Gerland was a 2–0 defeat against Angers on 5 December 2015. The new ground is known for sponsorship reasons as the Groupama Stadium. It is a big, loud, modern bowl that suits a club with European ambitions, and Lyon like to turn it into a fortress.
The great rivalry is with Saint-Étienne, and the derby is known as the Derby rhônalpin. It began in the 1960s, when Lyon established themselves in the top flight, and it comes from proximity as well as social and cultural contrast: the clubs are only 61 kilometres apart, Lyon is traditionally seen as a comfortable, middle-class city and Saint-Étienne as an industrial, working-class one. The fixture also sets the latest winners against the former giants, and it is a highlight of any Ligue 1 calendar. Marseille are a long-running foe too, with the pair first meeting on 23 September 1945, and the club's dominance created fresh ones with Bordeaux, Paris Saint-Germain and Lille. Minor rivalries with Grenoble complete the picture.
A record to improve: 2 wins and 8 defeats against Paris Saint Germain for Lyon (all competitions).
