Montpellier began in 1919 as Stade Olympique Montpelliérain and were among the twenty clubs at the start of professional top-flight football in 1932–33. In 1974 they merged with AS Paillade to become Montpellier Hérault Sport Club. Last place and 31 points meant relegation in 1999–2000, and after going down again in 2003–04 the club spent five seasons in Ligue 2 before returning for 2009–10 and finishing fifth. The first Ligue 1 title came in 2011–12, sealed on 20 May 2012 with a 2–1 win over Auxerre and a brace from John Utaka. After 16 consecutive seasons in Ligue 1, relegation arrived on 26 April 2025.
