The story starts on 9 July 1904, when a gymnastics club was set up in the Les Baumettes district. On 20 September 1919 it merged with the local club Gallia, and from that deal came the red and black combination that Nice still wear. A change of name followed on 22 December 1924, to Olympique Gymnaste Club de Nice, and the club reached Division 2 in 1936. Promotion under Austrian manager Anton Marek in 1948–49 put them in the top flight, and the 1950s belonged to Nice: a first-ever league title in 1950–51 under Jean Lardi, a Coupe de France win in 1954, and a European debut in 1956–57, when Real Madrid knocked them out in the quarter-finals. Later came a slow slide, ending in relegation in 1981–82 after a 19th-place finish. The strangest chapter arrived in 1997, when Nice won the Coupe de France and were relegated within days of it, finishing last in the league. They spent five seasons in Ligue 2 before returning in 2002–03. In June 2016 a consortium led by Chien Lee bought 80% of the club, and a third-place finish in 2016–17 followed.
Nice play at the Allianz Riviera, a modern bowl on the plain of the Var at Nice-Lingostière that holds 36,178 and opened in 2013. The old home was the Stade du Ray, where the club played from 1927 until 2013, and its capacity of 17,415 after a last renovation in 1997 shows why a move was needed. The club began pushing for a new stadium in 2002, excavation started in July 2006, and building work ran from 2011 to September 2013. The city was selected by the national federation as a host for the Euro 2016 tournament. The extra size is the headline: a ground more than double the Ray's capacity gives Nice room to grow, though a bigger bowl also needs a bigger crowd to feel loud.
Nice have developed rivalries with two clubs in particular, Cannes and Marseille, and both matter to the way the club sees itself. Marseille are the big southern name, the benchmark that anyone in the region wants to beat, while Cannes is the rivalry where pride counts for more than the league table. These are the kind of fixtures where reputations count for little. Pride tends to lift a team above its form, so be careful about trusting the table in games with this history.
