Monaco's story runs through a few remarkable managers. In 1960 Lucien Leduc gave the club its first professional trophy, a Coupe de France final won in extra time against Saint-Étienne, and in 1963 he delivered the club's first League and Cup Double. After years of ups and downs Leduc returned and won the championship in 1978. Wenger came in and took the title straight away, in 1988, then lifted the Coupe de France in 1991 while the side kept going deep into the European Cup. Wenger always held the view that Marseille, bitter rivals, were cheating, and it emerged in 1993 that they had been. After him came league titles under Jean Tigana in 1997 and Claude Puel in 2000. Money problems then hit hard, and in 2011 Monaco dropped into Ligue 2. In December 2011 Dmitry Rybolovlev bought 66.67% of the club, and in 2013 the cheque book came out, headlined by a club-record £50 million fee for Radamel Falcao. The league title returned on 17 May 2017, with a 2–0 win over Saint-Étienne.
Monaco play at the Stade Louis II in Fontvieille, a ground that holds 16,360 and opened in 1985. The club used the original Stade Louis II after its construction in 1939 until the present stadium replaced it in 1985, built on a nearby site of land taken back from the sea, which still shapes its waterside surroundings. It is a compact ground, and a long way from the biggest arenas, so crowds are small but the setting is hard to beat. It was the home of the UEFA Super Cup each August between 1998 and 2012, until UEFA decided to rotate the event around different stadiums. The small capacity can mean a flat atmosphere for ordinary league games, so home advantage often counts for less here than at most league grounds.
Monaco's rivalry with Marseille is a grudge more than a derby. Wenger had long held the view that Marseille were up to no good, and in 1993 it emerged that those bitter rivals had been fixing matches and committing numerous improprieties. That left Monaco with a sense that their success in that period could have been far greater, and the sore point has never quite gone away. There is no long chain of local derbies sitting alongside it, so this is the rivalry that carries the history for the club.
