Officially launched on 1 November 2004 as one of eight A-League sides, Sydney FC beat Central Coast Mariners 1โ0 in the 2006 Grand Final after finishing second. In 2017 came a double, and in 2017โ18 back-to-back premierships. Steve Corica, appointed in 2018, won the 2019 Grand Final on penalties in Perth and the 2019โ20 league and championship. Sydney moved into the rebuilt Sydney Football Stadium for 2022โ23 and lifted the 2023 Australia Cup, beating Brisbane Roar 3โ1 in the final at home.
Sydney FC hold five A-League Men Championships, in 2006, 2010, 2017, 2019 and 2020, and four A-League Men Premierships, in 2009โ10, 2016โ17, 2017โ18 and 2019โ20. The Australia Cup arrived in 2017 and 2023, and 2005 brought the Australian Club World Championship Qualifying Tournament and the OFC Champions League.
Sydney Football Stadium, with a capacity of 42,500, has hosted the club since 2022โ23. Melbourne Victory were the visitors for the opening match on 8 October 2022, which drew 21,840 supporters. The old stadium, built in 1988, was demolished in 2019 and rebuilt. In between, from 2018โ19 to 2021โ22, Sydney played home games at Leichhardt Oval and Jubilee Oval.
The Sydney Derby against cross-town Western Sydney Wanderers is the local fight. The Wanderers are labelled arch rivals, and a twist of irony came when Ninkovic moved across to them, with the clubs later meeting in a Derby elimination final. Melbourne Victory are the national one: both sides are among the most decorated in the A-League Men, and the inter-state rivalry has a name, The Big Blue.
Against Western Sydney Wanderers, Sydney come out on top more often than not: 6 wins, 2 draws, 2 defeats (all competitions).
