Strasbourg began in 1906 as Fußballclub Neudorf. The first official trophy came in the 1950–51 French Cup, with Valenciennes beaten in the final and 50,000 fans welcoming the team home. The great year was 1978–79: a brace from Wagner and a goal from Ehrlacher against Lyon on 1 June 1979 settled the championship, and 200,000 people greeted the team at the station the next day. Almost every player from that side had gone within a few years, and relegation to Division 2 followed in 1985–86. Gress was recalled after the failure to win promotion in 1990–91 and, with young players such as Frank Leboeuf, took the team back up. Relegation came in 2000–01, and in 2004–05 the club won the League Cup against Caen, 2–1. The club went bankrupt in 2011 and restarted from the fifth division. Strasbourg won the National in 2015–16, took the second division in 2016–17 to reach the top flight, and won the League Cup again in 2018–19, with a penalty shoot-out win over Guingamp in the final.
Strasbourg's home is the Stade de la Meinau, a ground in the south of the city that the club has used since 1914. It holds 32,300 and has big-match history behind it, having staged games at the 1938 World Cup and at Euro 1984.
