Football Club Lorient was founded on 2 April 1926 and began as an amateur outfit, winning the regional league in 1932 and again four years later. Professional status came in 1967, when the club placed a bid and was elected to Division 2. The 1980s were bleak: the club slid down to Division 4, then climbed back, taking Division 4 the year after the regional title of 1983 and Division 3 in 1985. It went bust again in 1990 but was allowed to stay in Division 3. Gourcuff came back in 1991 and the long haul ended with a title in the Championnat National and promotion to Division 2. In 1997–98 they stunned the second division by running away with the league, and 1998–99 brought Lorient's first-ever appearance in Division 1. Relegation and returns followed: up again for 2001–02, back in 2006, promoted in 2020 when the season ended early because of the pandemic, relegated on goal difference in 2023–24 and champions of Ligue 2 on 10 May 2025. On 28 January 2026 Black Night Football Club became the sole shareholder, just as at AFC Bournemouth.
Lorient play at the Stade du Moustoir, a ground in the city that holds 18,110 and opened in 1959. It is a compact stadium, and a small, loyal home crowd can make a real difference there. The size means visiting fans do not dominate, and the atmosphere is the sort that suits a stubborn home side.
