Preview
Right, folks, welcome back to another one of my previews, and I'm telling you, this one's got the kind of goal potential that makes my heart sing. Deportivo La Coruna host Levante on 16 October, and I'm already reaching for the "O" in my pocket.
Let's start with the elephant in the room — Levante's recent form is absolutely loaded. In their last five matches, they've been involved in 4 out of 5 games with three or more goals. That 3–3 thriller against Sevilla on 12 October, the 3–1 loss at Villarreal, the 2–4 defeat to Barcelona, and the 5–2 demolition of Real Betis back in August — that's a team that doesn't know how to shut up. Four of their last five went over 2.5, and across their last ten, seven of ten have crossed that line. Their away record over 20 games shows 9 over and 11 under, which is a bit more balanced, but the recent trajectory is screaming goals. They've scored 2.2 per game and conceded 2.4 per game in that last five — that's a lot of movement in both directions.
Now, Deportivo La Coruna at home. Their last five has been a bit quieter — only 2 of 5 over 2.5 — and they've lost their last two, conceding 6 in the process. But look at the xG numbers: they've been creating 1.25 per game and leaking 1.54 per game. That's a combined 2.79 expected goals in their matches. Add Levante's 1.45 for and 1.57 against, and you're looking at a combined expected goal count north of 3. The numbers don't lie — this fixture is built for goals, and I love that.
The head-to-head is dated — no meetings within the last 12 months — but the historical record over 10 games spanning 12 years shows 6 of 10 went over 2.5. At Deportivo's ground specifically, the three meetings produced scores of 1–2, 2–2, and 2–1. Every single one of those had at least two goals, and two of the three had three. Not a bad track record for the "O."
The counter-argument? Deportivo's home record over 20 games is 9 over, 11 under. Their last five has been low-scoring, and they've failed to score in only 1 of those 5. And Levante's away record is 9 over, 11 under — a coin-flip at best. If both teams park the bus, this could be a 1–1 or a 0–0, and I hate that. But the xG data and Levante's recent scoring explosion point the other way. I'd rate the chance of three or more goals at around 53%, which sits comfortably above the market's 50.51% implied by the 1.98 price. There's value here, and I'm not about to pass on it.
Key Points:
- Levante have gone over 2.5 in 4 of their last 5 matches and 7 of their last 10
- Combined xG from both teams' recent games suggests roughly 3+ expected goals
- Historical head-to-head at this venue: all 3 meetings produced 2+ goals, 2 of 3 produced 3+
- Market prices Over 2.5 at 1.98, implying 50.51% — I rate the chance higher than that
Verdict: I'm going with Over 2.5 goals at 1.98. Life's too short for nil-nil, and this one's got the ingredients for a proper goal-fest.
