Right, so we've got Lorient hosting Monaco in Ligue 1 on 18 October, and this one's got my eyes on it. Monaco come in with some serious momentum — three wins and two draws from their last five, no losses, and they've scored nine goals in that stretch. That's 1.8 a game, and they pulled off a 2-1 win at Paris Saint Germain's ground back in September. That's not a small feat, bra.
Lorient, on the other hand, are in a bit of a mixed bag. Two wins, a draw and two losses from their last five. They did grab a 1-0 win over Paris FC at home on 10 October, which is nice, but they dropped points to Le Mans away and Estac Troyes at home. Their home record over the last 20 home games is solid — 10 wins, 7 draws, 3 losses — but the recent form isn't screaming confidence.
Now here's where it gets interesting for the BTTS angle. Monaco have scored in every single one of their last five matches — not a single game where they failed to find the net. Lorient have also scored in all five of their recent games. Look at the venue records: Monaco's away games over the last 20 away games have seen both teams score in 15 of 20, and Lorient's home games have had both teams score in 12 of 20. That's a strong pattern, and it's exactly what you want when you're looking at both teams to score.
The head-to-head backs it up too. The most recent meeting, back in January at Monaco's ground, ended 1-3 with Lorient winning away. Both teams found the scoresheet. Going further back, the older meetings at Lorient's ground produced a 3-1 and a 2-2 — again, both sides scoring. The only exception in the full 19-meeting history is one 0-0 draw.
The counter-argument is that Lorient's home record does include 8 games out of 20 where at least one team failed to score, and their last five has two such games. Monaco's away record also has 5 games out of 20 where BTTS was no. And Lorient's home defence is decent — they've kept 7 clean sheets in 20 home games. So it's not a guarantee, and you can't just tick the box without thinking.
But the overall picture is clear. Two teams that are both scoring regularly, meeting in a fixture where both sides have historically found the net. Monaco's attack is consistent — 1.9 goals per game over their last 10 — and Lorient have not failed to score in any of their last five. The price of 1.75 reflects the market's view at 57.14%, but I'd put my own estimate a touch higher, around 63%, given how consistently both sides are finding the net.
Key Points:
My pick: both teams to score.
