The force is strong with Reading, but Wigan's home ground... hmm, it is not what it used to be.
Wigan arrive at this fixture with a troubling pattern. Four of their last five matches ended without them finding the net, and three of those five were defeats. The 0-4 loss to Stockport County at home on 5 September and the 0-1 defeat to Wycombe on 19 September paint a picture of a side that simply cannot break through. Their xG figures tell a similar story: across three recent games with data, Wigan generated 1.46 expected goals per game but scored none. The creative spark has gone out, and the lights at home feel dim.
Reading, by contrast, arrive with purpose. Two wins, two draws and one loss in their last five, with 10 goals scored and just 6 conceded. The 5-1 thrashing of Milton Keynes Dons on 10 October showed their away form is alive and well. Over 20 away games, Reading have won 9, drawn 6 and lost 5, scoring 1.55 per game and conceding just 0.9. Their xG numbers in recent matches are remarkable: 3.18 per game for, and only 1.09 against. The force is with them.
The head-to-head at this ground tells its own tale. In the recent meeting on 10 February, Reading came away with a 2-1 win. Before that, on 28 March, Reading won 3-0 at their own ground. Both recent meetings belong to Reading. The older meetings at this venue โ a 1-2 loss in 2025 and a 1-0 win in 2024 โ are historical record and do not carry the weight of current form.
Yet Wigan's home record over 20 games is not without merit: 9 wins, 2 draws, 9 losses, with 1.15 goals scored per game. And Reading's away defence, while solid, is not impenetrable โ they have conceded in 15 of their 20 away games. The 1-1 draw at Bradford on 3 October and the 2-2 at Wycombe on 26 September show that even a strong side can find the net against them.
The question, then, is whether Wigan's scoring drought will continue. Four games without a goal in the last five, eight without a goal in 20 home games, and an xG output that has not translated into actual goals โ the pattern is clear. Reading's defensive xG against is low at 1.09 per game, and they have conceded just one goal in two recent matches with data.
Key Points:
The wise choice, my young friend, is to trust the pattern. Wigan's inability to score is the defining feature of this fixture, and the numbers do not lie. I recommend both teams not to score.
