Right, so Wigan are hosting Reading at home on 17 October, and if you've been following this fixture, the last two times these two met, Reading walked away with the points. In February, Reading won 2–1 at Wigan's ground, and then in March they piled on 3–0 at their own end. Two meetings, two wins, and Wigan managed just one goal between them. That's a pattern that's hard to ignore.
Now, look at where these two are right now. Reading have won five of their last ten, drawn two and lost three, scoring 23 goals and conceding just 11. That's 2.3 a game on the attack and 1.1 on the defence. Wigan, on the other hand, have won three of their last ten, drawn one and lost six, scoring 11 and conceding 17. The gap is plain as day. And if you zoom in on the last five, it's even starker: Wigan have lost three of five, failed to score in four of them, and conceded eight. Reading have won two, drawn two and lost one, scoring ten and conceding six. The form gap is not subtle.
Reading's away record over 20 games is 9 wins, 6 draws, 5 losses, at 1.65 points per game, scoring 1.55 a game and conceding 0.9. Wigan's home record over 20 games is 9 wins, 2 draws, 9 losses, at 1.45 points per game, scoring 1.15 and conceding 1.25. So even on the longer run, Reading on the road are the better side on every meaningful measure. And that 5–1 thrashing at Milton Keynes Dons just seven days ago showed the attack is firing.
Now, the counter-argument, because I'm not a fool. Wigan at home have won nine of their last 20, and they did beat Reading 1–0 at this ground back in January 2024. Their home defence over 20 games is respectable at 1.25 conceded per game. And Reading did lose 0–2 to Chelsea U21 in the EFL Trophy just four days ago, which, while not a league game, does show they can go quiet. Plus, Wigan's xG data over three recent games shows they're creating chances at 1.46 per game, even if the actual goals haven't come yet. So there's a thread of hope for the home side.
But here's the thing: Wigan's recent home form is grim. They lost 0–1 to Wycombe and 0–4 to Stockport County at home. Three of their last five games ended with them on the losing end of the scoreline, and they've failed to score in four of those five. Against a Reading side that's scoring at 2.3 a game over their last ten and winning both recent meetings, that's a tough ask.
Key Points:
- Reading won both recent head-to-head meetings (3–0 and 1–2), with Wigan scoring just one goal between them
- Reading's last 10: 5W 2D 3L, 2.3 goals scored per game; Wigan's last 10: 3W 1D 6L, 1.1 scored per game
- Wigan failed to score in 4 of their last 5 matches and lost 3 of those 5
- Reading's away record: 9W 6D 5L in 20 games, 1.65 points per game, 0.9 conceded per game
- Wigan's home record: 9W 2D 9L in 20 games, but recent home form includes 0–1 and 0–4 defeats
The numbers, the form, and the head-to-head all point the same way. Reading are the stronger side, they've won both recent meetings, and Wigan's attack has been silent in four of their last five games. I'm going with the away win at 2.12.
