Ajax: the Sons of the Gods
Plenty of clubs win trophies. Ajax changed the way the game is played. The idea that any outfield player can attack, defend and swap roles mid-move was born in Amsterdam in the late 1960s, then followed Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff to Barcelona and became the trademark of the Netherlands team.
The club was founded on 18 March 1900 and named after Ajax, the hero of Greek myth. Hence the nickname "de Godenzonen", the Sons of the Gods. Ajax have played in every Eredivisie season since the league started in 1956, and with Feyenoord and PSV they form the Dutch "big three". They hold the records for league titles and Dutch cups, and they've lifted four European Cups.
The 2026/27 Ajax are a club in a hurry. Head coach Michel took over on 2 June 2026, the squad was torn up and rebuilt over the summer, and after 10 Eredivisie rounds they're second, three points behind Feyenoord. Below is the full story of Ajax FC, from Michels to De Toekomst, then the markets that matter and our angles for the season.
