Understanding Each Way Betting

What is an Each Way Bet?

An each way bet is essentially two separate bets: one on the selection to win, and one on the selection to place (usually 2nd, 3rd, or 4th depending on the number of runners). Your total stake is doubled - half goes on the win, half on the place.

How it Works

Place Odds = 1 + (Win Odds - 1) × Place Terms

For example, with win odds of 5.0 (4/1) and place terms of 1/5: Place odds = 1 + (5 - 1) × 0.2 = 1.8

Common Place Terms

Horse Racing

  • • 2-4 runners: Win only (no each way)
  • • 5-7 runners: 1/4 odds, 1st & 2nd place
  • • 8+ runners: 1/5 odds, 1st, 2nd & 3rd place
  • • 16+ runners (handicap): 1/4 odds, 4 places

Golf & Other Sports

  • • Golf majors: 1/4 or 1/5 odds, 5-8 places
  • • Regular tournaments: 1/4 or 1/5 odds, 3-5 places
  • • Tennis: Usually 1/2 odds, 2 places (final only)
  • • Football: Varies by tournament and bookmaker

Each Way Betting Tips

  • Value in Big Fields: Each way betting is often most valuable in large field events (golf, big handicaps) where place terms are generous relative to the win odds.
  • Extra Places: Many bookmakers offer "extra places" promotions on big races - this can significantly improve the value of your each way bets.
  • Avoid Short Favourites: Each way betting on short-priced favourites (under 2.0) often results in a loss even when the horse places.
  • Compare Place Terms: Different bookmakers may offer different place terms on the same event - always shop around for the best value.
