Wigan and Reading meet at Wigan's ground on 17 October in League One, and if you've been following the last few weeks, this looks like it could be a quiet affair for the bookmakers.
Wigan have been struggling to find the back of the net. In their last five matches, they've scored just three goals and failed to score in four of those five. The 0–4 defeat to Stockport County at home on 5 September and the 0–1 loss to Wycombe on 19 September show a side having real trouble creating chances. Their xG data from the three recent games with available figures shows 1.46 expected goals per game, but the actual tally on those same games was zero. At home over 20 games, Wigan have kept the total under 2.5 goals in 11 of those 20, and their last five matches at all venues have produced under 2.5 in three of five.
Reading's away record over 20 games tells a similar story: 11 of 20 finished under 2.5 goals. And the two most recent meetings between these sides — Reading's 3–0 win at their own ground on 28 March and the 1–2 at Wigan on 10 February — both produced three goals total. When both venue records lean the same way, that's a pattern worth noticing.
The counter-argument is real, though. Reading are in good attacking form. They won 5–1 at Milton Keynes Dons on 10 October, and their last 10 games at all venues have seen them score 23 goals (2.3 per game), with 7 of those 10 finishing over 2.5. Their xG for in the two games with data is 3.18 per game, and they've actually scored 10 goals in those same two. That's a side that can open up a game quickly, and you can't ignore that.
But here's the thing: Wigan's recent inability to score is the single most telling number in this fixture. Four of their last five games ended with them on zero. At home, 13 of their last 20 have seen at least one team fail to score. When the home side is the one struggling to find the net, and the away side's venue record also leans towards low totals, the underdog on the goals market starts to look like a little puppy the market is walking past.
Key Points:
My pick: under 2.5 goals.
