Benfica: the Eagles of Lisbon
Walk up Avenida Eusébio da Silva Ferreira on a match night and you're heading for the biggest stadium in Portugal, home of the country's best-supported club. Benfica fans have been turning Lisbon red for more than a century. They don't do quiet.
Sport Lisboa e Benfica hold a record 38 Primeira Liga titles and have never been relegated. Membership passed 400,000 in February 2025, at the time the biggest of any sports club in the world. They're one of Portugal's "Big Three" alongside Sporting CP and FC Porto, and no Portuguese club has won more games in the European Cup and Champions League.
Yet the story everyone tells is about a man who walked out in 1962. Béla Guttmann won Benfica two European Cups, left after a row over money and, so the legend goes, promised they wouldn't win in Europe for 100 years. Eight European finals later, they still haven't.
Nine league rounds into 2026/27 (to 26 October 2026), Marco Silva's side sit second, five points behind Porto, and top the Europa League table after three of eight matchdays. Below you'll find the history, the legends and the ground, then the markets and our betting angles.
