The boy Arsenal let go
Long before the London Palladium, there was a boy from Chingford who wasn't quite athletic enough for Arsenal. Born at Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone on 28 July 1993, he joined Ridgeway Rovers at six, and that's where Harry Kane's career began: the same Walthamstow club that gave David Beckham his start. Arsenal took him into their academy, kept him for about a year and sent him home.
Here's the twist. He was an Arsenal fan back then, the odd one out in a family of Spurs supporters. He went back to Ridgeway, moved to Watford's academy in 2004 and within weeks had put a hat-trick past Tottenham's youth side. Spurs came in for him straight away. He was 11, and he'd stay for almost two decades.
On Monday night that same kid, now 33 and England's captain, was named the 2026 Ballon d'Or winner, the first Englishman to win it since Michael Owen in 2001. We've covered the night at the Palladium and the season that won it in full. This one is about the long way round he took to get there.
Nobody had him down as the next big thing, and he knows it. "I was never the person that people thought was going to be the superstar like some of the guys now," he said after collecting the trophy. That's exactly why this one feels so good.
