Few clubs can swing you from joy to despair inside ninety minutes quite like Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs have won the double, conquered Europe and produced some of the most gifted footballers England has ever seen, and then, just when you think you have them figured out, found a fresh way to make their own supporters wince. That is the deal with this club, and it is a big part of why people love it.

Whether you call them Spurs, the Lilywhites or simply Tottenham, here is the story so far: the cricket-club beginnings, the stadium, the Arsenal rivalry, the trophies, the heroes and where the club stands as 2026/27 gets going.

It all began in 1882, when a group of schoolboys from the Hotspur Cricket Club went looking for something to do in the winter. Hotspur FC became Tottenham Hotspur a couple of years later, partly to avoid being mixed up with another London side of a similar name. Smart move on both counts.

The name itself is pure theatre. It comes from Sir Henry Percy, better known as Harry Hotspur, the medieval knight who turns up in Shakespeare's Henry IV plays and earned his nickname for digging his spurs hard into his horse as he charged into battle. Fearless, fast and a little bit reckless is not a bad description of how Tottenham have often played.

Supporters have been shortening it to Spurs since the early days, while "the Lilywhites" is all about the kit. The white shirts and navy shorts date back to 1898, a nod to Preston North End, the powerhouse of early English football, and they have been Tottenham's trademark ever since.

For 118 years White Hart Lane was home: creaky, atmospheric and full of memorable nights. By the 2010s, though, Spurs needed something that could stand alongside Europe's elite, and in 2019 the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opened right next door.

The numbers are big. It holds 62,850, which makes it the largest club ground in London and the third-largest in England behind Wembley and Old Trafford (our Manchester United history tells that story). The star turn is the South Stand, a single tier of around 17,500 seats that is one of the biggest of its kind in the country and turns European nights into a wall of sound. Elsewhere there are around 8,000 premium seats, a small army of food and drink outlets, an on-site microbrewery and a retractable pitch that slides away to reveal an artificial surface for NFL games.

When the crowd is right behind the team, it is a proper fortress. And the crowd wants one thing above all: wins with style, flair and a bit of swagger. More on that shortly.

Ask a Spurs fan who they most want to beat and the answer arrives before you finish the question: Arsenal. The North London derby is about territory, identity and bragging rights as much as points.

The feud has deep roots. Arsenal moved from Woolwich to Highbury in 1913, right into what Spurs supporters regarded as their own patch, and the two clubs have been trading blows as north London neighbours ever since. Last-minute winners, red cards, wild celebrations: these games have had the lot. The two meet at least twice a season in the Premier League, and for supporters of both clubs those two dates are circled in red long before the fixture list is even published.

Spurs have always had a knack for getting there first. In 1901 they won the FA Cup as a non-league side, something nobody has done since the Football League began. In 1960-61, under Bill Nicholson and captained by Danny Blanchflower, they completed the first league and FA Cup double of the 20th century. Two years later they became the first British club to win a European trophy, beating Atlético Madrid 5-1 in the 1963 Cup Winners' Cup final, and UEFA Cups followed in 1972 and 1984.

Then came a long, dry spell. After the 2008 League Cup there was nothing for 17 years, until Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao to win the 2025 Europa League. Cue scenes.

Every Spurs fan has their own list, but a few names turn up on all of them.

Jimmy Greaves

Most supporters of a certain age will tell you he was the best player ever to pull on a white shirt. Greaves scored 266 goals in 379 games, 220 of them in the league, and he held the club record for decades. He is widely considered one of the finest English forwards of all time.

Harry Kane

A local lad, an academy graduate and one of the great strikers of his generation. Kane finished with 280 goals for Spurs, overtaking Greaves to become the club's all-time record scorer before leaving for Bayern Munich in 2023. He captained the side and left as a legend, even without a trophy to show for it.

Gareth Bale

He arrived as a promising left-back and left as one of the most devastating attackers in the world. Bale was twice named PFA Players' Player of the Year, in 2011 and 2013, before Real Madrid came calling.

Son Heung-min

Ten years at the club, captain for a spell and the man who lifted the 2025 Europa League trophy. His pace, finishing and general decency made him a hero to the Spurs faithful, and his move to LAFC in 2025 was hard to watch.

And the rest

Ledley King, the one-club defender who was brilliant whenever his knees allowed. Paul Gascoigne, magic on the pitch and chaos off it. Luka Modrić, who left for Real Madrid and went on to win the Ballon d'Or. David Ginola, French flair personified. Steve Perryman, the club's record appearance holder with 854 games. And Blanchflower, the captain of that 1961 double-winning side.

"Do it the Spurs way" is more than a slogan. It is an expectation that Tottenham should play with flair, creativity and a bit of courage, and that winning is only half the job. Nicholson's double side of 1960-61 set the template, and every manager since has put his own spin on it. Ange Postecoglou's high-tempo, all-out attacking style was the latest version, and it brought the Europa League home in 2025.

The supporters are the other half of the equation. They want to be entertained, they make themselves heard, and on European nights in the South Stand they are among the loudest crowds in the country.

For all the Europa League joy, the league has been a struggle. Tottenham finished 17th in 2024-25 with just 38 points, one place above the relegation zone, a poor return for a club of their size. Postecoglou was sacked a few weeks after the Europa League final, Thomas Frank took over, and Son left for LAFC.

The 2025/26 season brought another 17th-place finish, secured by beating Everton on the final day. Roberto De Zerbi was appointed head coach on 31 March 2026 on a long-term contract, and the new campaign began awkwardly: Spurs went into the October international break bottom of the table, winless after five games, including a 3-2 home defeat by Aston Villa.

The ingredients for a revival are still there: a huge, loud support, one of the best stadiums in the world and a squad with real quality. The questions are about how it fits together. Can De Zerbi turn a rocky start into a push for the top four? How will the squad be rebuilt after losing so many key players? And can the club's commercial muscle translate into regular European football again?

• Treat the slow start with care, both ways. Bottom of the table makes Spurs the obvious relegation pick, but we think the squad is better than the points suggest, so they look more of a trade than a long-term bet.
